A variety of uses of AI in the education sector, such as the creation of interactive virtual classrooms, ” the removal of language obstacles, the creation of “smart content, the creation of personalized lesson plans for each student, and the closure of knowledge gaps. The market for AI in schools is to reach many billion dollars in the upcoming years. Its ability to transform all aspects of the educational process has led to its spectacular rise.
The funds are provided for the construction of an Institute for Accessible and Intelligent Technologies for Education on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus. The study investigates the non-cognitive learning abilities of K-12 kids.
May 08, 2023 – The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Columbia University $20 million to build and run the AI Institute for ARtificial and Natural Intelligence (ARNI), an interdisciplinary center tasked with linking important advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) with neuroscience.
According to the press release, recent discoveries in AI, cognitive science, and neuroscience have only had a superficial impact on each other due to developments in data science and neural processing, circuitry, and learning. In the following decade, ARNI aims to speed up progress in these domains and widen their implications on research and society.
This effort intends to enable different applications in the manufacturing and medical industries, as well as socioeconomic solutions such as better social safety nets and technology to help build hypotheses about brain function, by overcoming gaps among biological and artificial networks.
The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign received an amount of $20 million from the Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences (IES) in order to create innovative AI tools that improve “non-cognitive learning skills” like academic resilience, determination, as well as teamwork.
This is the recent expenditure in the federal government’s amount of $500 million artificial intelligence effort in this field of education, technologies, and infrastructure. Various federal ministries and organizations, as well as private-sector collaborator IBM, have contributed funding.
The institution will use the grant to build the Institute for Accessible and Intelligent Technologies for Education (INVITE).
“INVITE’s work will seek to redefine how learners engage with technology for learning by prioritizing methods that consider the whole learner,” according to the announcement.
Future studies will concentrate on K-12 educational settings.
Noncognitive ability is defined as “a set of attitudes, behaviors, and tactics thought to underpin achievement in school and at work.”
IES Commissioner of Education Research explained the project’s three components in a message to Government Technology:
A National Science Foundation official stated in an email to Government Technology, “In a nutshell, given this perspective, ‘evaluation’ is less on judging how well individual learners perform and more about evaluating how well learning environments serve the learners.” As a result, while the project will be creating methods to assess learners’ persistence, resilience in school, and collaborative abilities while using particular types of interactive educational platforms, these metrics should not be interpreted as indicators of learners’ intrinsic capacities.”
The University at Buffalo (UB) in New York State got $20 million earlier this year to create the National AI Institute for Exceptional Education, which will pursue research to improve educational results for kids with speech and language problems. UB is working on an AI screener that will allow universal early detection for all children, as well as an AI orchestrator to collaborate with speech pathologists to deliver individualized therapies for children within the framework of their official Individualised Educational Plan (IEP).
” IES director Mark Schneider stated in a news release. “We believe that they will offer valuable insights into the way to tap cutting-edge technology to enhance the field of education — but more importantly, we believe that they will result in improved results for pupils while discovering ways to free up the time of educators to deliver more informed customized instruction for the pupils that they care greatly about.”
