id="Historical_Background_of_the_British_Education_Process">Historical Background of the British Education Process

The British education system is a globally famous system. It has a lengthy history and has inspired many nations.

The British school system began in medieval times when the Catholic Church founded monastic schools for priests and noblemen.

The Anglican Church built schools in the 17th century to educate poor children and prepare them for the church. These “Charity Schools” taught reading, writing, and math.

Learning in the UK changed drastically after the 18th century. The state became increasingly interested in and funded education. Also, this century introduces new education methods. Like the women-run Dame Schools, which educated poor girls and boys.

The First Education Act of 1870 made basic education a right for all UK children. This Act also introduced examinations to measure student growth and school efficiency.

UK education expanded in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1902, free public schools were established, and in 1944, the Second Education Act established a national education system.

In addition, the growth of new universities and the demand for higher education expanded the British schooling system in the 1960s. On the flip side, science and current technology education were added as the school system was drastically patched up.

Different Stages of School Education in the UK

There are many types of the UK school system; these are as follows:

Primary Education

For kids between the ages of 5 and 11: 6 years of study.

Secondary Education

In secondary education, students study from the ages of 11 to 16, for 5 years. Students aged 14 to 16 prepare for and take their GCSE exams.

Sixth Form

The Sixth form runs from ages 16 to 18, with 2 years of study. But it is tougher than the other systems. In this stage, students select specialised programs. These are A-level and IB (International Baccalaureate).

While academic routes comprise A-level and IB. On the flip side, there is also a vocational route for students who want to work alongside their jobs.

Vocational qualifications are practical qualifications such as NVQ and BTEC. It is the blend of theory and practice.

University Foundation (Age 17+)

International students aged 17 and over can also complete a university foundation curriculum through a pathway provider.

These one-year courses provide an alternative to A Levels and prepare students for admission to a partnering university.

Moreover, every foundation program is built around a single academic area, such as business, engineering or art and design. And it usually offers a guaranteed place on a degree course if you effectively complete it.

Higher Education (18 plus)

Universities in the UK are internationally famous for the high quality of education and variety of courses.

There are three different kinds of university programs in the British Education system.

Bachelor’s Degree: 3-4 years (or longer in some courses, such as medicine and Veterinary Science)

Master’s degree: 1-2 years

PhD (Doctorate): 3 to 7 years

UK universities foster separate learning, research and critical thinking, abilities that prepare graduates for professions worldwide.

How are students in the UK assessed at school?

International students‘ growth will be assessed continually for the duration of their primary and secondary schooling in the UK school system

This will be obtained through a combination of coursework and examinations, with a progressive weight on examinations.

Assessments are mainly informal and based on observations made by teachers in the early years and primary school. The exception is SATs tests in years 2 and 6.

From about age 11, when they enter secondary education, kids begin taking formal tests.

Further, these exams are called GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) and are taken in a range of courses chosen by the student but limited by what the school offers.

Typically, GCSEs are where students start thinking about what professional route they are interested in.

So, they are often the first place students look when searching for GCSE teachers.

Subjects Lists

Primary level

Here are the subjects usually taught in the British education process.

English

Mathematics

Science

Computing

History

Geography

Art and Design

Design and Technology (DT)

Music

Physical Education (PE)

Religious Education (RE)

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE).
